The terms "CV" and "Resume" are often used interchangeably, but they are not the same thing—especially depending on where you live.
Geography Matters
- USA & Canada:
- Resume: A 1-2 page summary of skills and experience. Used for almost all jobs.
- CV (Curriculum Vitae): A long, detailed document (5+ pages) used ONLY for academic, medical, or research roles.
- Europe, UK, NZ, Asia:
- CV: The standard document for all job applications. It is equivalent to the US "Resume."
Key Differences (US Context)
Length
Resume: Short, concise (1-2 pages).
CV: Comprehensive, no page limit.
Content
Resume: Tailored to the specific job. Focuses on relevant achievements.
CV: Includes everything: publications, grants, conferences, teaching experience.
Purpose
Resume: To get a corporate job interview.
CV: To get an academic tenure, grant, or fellowship.
Note: If you are applying for a standard job in Europe, create a "CV" but follow the rules of a US "Resume" (keep it short).
