An applicant tracking system helps an employer manage applications. Clear structure and accurate information make a CV easier to review. There is no universal ATS score or template that guarantees selection.
What is an ATS?
An ATS stores and organises applications. Some systems extract information from documents, offer search tools or support screening rules chosen by an employer. Features and hiring processes differ, so follow the instructions in each job advertisement.
How to Optimize Your CV for ATS
1. Use Standard Headings
The ATS looks for specific section titles. Use:
- Work Experience
- Education
- Skills
- Contact Information
Avoid creative headers like "My Journey" or "Professional Timeline."
2. Keyword Optimization
Read the job description carefully. If they ask for "Project Management" and "Agile," make sure those exact words appear in your CV.
3. Keep Formatting Simple
ATS software struggles with:
- Tables and Columns
- Headers and Footers
- Images and Charts
- Unusual Fonts
Stick to a single-column layout with standard fonts like Arial, Calibri, or Roboto.
4. Use the Right File Type
PDF is the standard, but ensure it's text-based, not an image scan. If the job ad specifically asks for Word (.docx), send that.
5. Spell Out Acronyms
Use both the acronym and the full term. Example: "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)."
Test Your CV
Copy your PDF text into a plain-text editor. Check that names, dates and sections appear in a sensible order. This can reveal extraction problems, although it does not reproduce every recruitment system.
Choose a simple layout in our free template gallery, use standard section headings and check the saved PDF. Follow the employer’s requested file format.
